Wrong direction

The economic direction that Italy has taken as well as the rest of the European Union, is not bringing the expected results. The debt of Italy is still growing, even with the consistent cuts to the pubblic spending. This situation is not a surprise or at lest should not be. The first actions taken by the Monti government, the supposed savior of Italy, was increase taxes in any area of the economy. After an initial increase of revenue, the disastrous effect of this measure on the overall Italian economy didn't wait long ti show. After 3 years, the tax revenues are falling, due mainly to the economy contraction caused by the previous years choices. Unfortunately this is not the end and if the economy policies at European level, I see more hard times coming for Italy.

Nobel prize lecturing

Shirin Ebadi, an Iranian nobel prize, has recently expessed a non positive opinion on Italian society and in particular on the women condition. Now, Italy is a free Country and everybody is allowed to express their oponion. However I could not avoid to think about that quote from the Bible that talks about a straw and a beam.

The conflict between the government and the Unions

In the last months, in Italy the conflict between the government and the Unions has became more intense. The government is not going to back up on the so much needed reforms in the job rules, the structure of the parlament, the election system. All these reforms are intended to modernize the Country and make it more competitive on the international market. It looks like everybody should be happy about that. There is instead a strong opposition from some of the Unions. According to these folks, the reforms will erode workers's right and will bring more uncertainty. One of the problems Italy have, is that job market is currently too still, with little opportunities for the companies to fire and even less opportunity for an unemployed to find a job. This, together with the high taxation, has reduced year by year the value of the salaries, that have not kept up with the prices rising and with the increasing taxation. The unions for decades were focused on the same issues of maintaining or increasing workers's right, buying these rights from the companies with low requests on the salary side, and selling them to the workers as big conquests of civilization. They completely failed in understanding how the world was evolving around them. Unfortunately they were not alone, also the governments and many industries were in the same situation. Now that the government has finally realized how urgent it is to turn page, they, or some of them, try to oppose the change, reproposing the same mantra of untouchable rights that they have used for the last 20 years....

Why this year El Nino will not develop

According to some interpretation, the El Nino/La Nina phenomena can be considered as a heat engine that is fuelled by the sun and transport heat at higher latitudes. In order for the engine to activate a certain amount of heat is required. If this amount is not reached, there is not enought energy to move the associated water mass. Just like a steam engine with a boiler that has not been adequately fueled with coal. Now, with the current reduced solar activity, I believe that the coal that fuels the El Nino engine is not sufficient to start the cycle. Several attempts took place this year but they always failed due to the lack of energy. The question is, will the energy accumulate in time and eventually reach the level required to start El Nino or every attemp dissipates the enegy accumulated and the cycle restart from beginning? In any case I believe we have long time to wait until we see a real El Nino.

On the concept of freedom

Too many people have a twisted concept of freedom. If you ask them what freedom is they will tell you that freedom is one of the most important of the human rights, that everybody should be free to go, to express their own opinon, to live their life the way they like better. Unfortunately for many of these people there is an unspoken limitation to their idea of freedom. All the above freedom is supported and defended only if it is in line with what they think or feel. If someone else try to express a different opinion, one that goes against their believes, magically this concept of freedom melts away like snow in the sun. In Italy we had an example of this behavior few days ago. The 'Standing Sentinels', a movement that intend to promote the value of the traditional family, organized one of their demonstration, that consist of standing silent in a public place, reading. No other demonstration can be more respectful and peaceful. Well, the wannabe defenders of 'everybody's rights' attacked the standing sentinels throwing objects, insulting them and looking for physical contact, that was avoiden only through a heavy police presence. Basically the freedom for these people is allowed for the people that share their ideas. All other points of view come from enemies to annihilake. Does this recall anything?

Go Mr. Renzi go!

I am not a supporter of Mr. Renzi's party and I might never vote for him, but right now I am totally supporting his action. He really understood what Italy needs to come out of the deep crisis that affects not only the economy but the whole society. Most of all I appreciate his attitude towards that politic area of wannabe progressists that with their mantra of untachable rights have paralised Italy for the last 30 years. Unfortunately, like I said many times, when Berlusconi was still at the goverment, because of the sproportionated power of the left in key areas of our society (school, justice, unions, etc...) a real change could succeed only if it were started from someone in the left area. The resistance due to ideology bias would have been otherwise too strong, as in fact happened.

Melting glaciers

This spring, I believe on the news of the Italian television channel RAI 3, the most politicized and leftist channel of the pubblic TV, a famous meteorologist, Luca Mercalli, a true believer in Global warming and a faithful follower of the IPCC word, broadcasted from some glacier in the Alps to introduce to the public an on going activity that is aimed at measuring the amount of ice lost during the summer by the Alps glaciers. Of course , according to him, every summer, due to CO2 produced by human activity and consequent rise of temperatures the amount of melted ice increase, and the winter precipitations are not so abundant due to global warming and so on. Now, the project involve two measurements and evaluation of the extension and volume of the glacier. One conducted in spring, one conducted in autumn. Given the cold and rainy summer we had this year in Italy, with many episode of snow on the higher mountains, and patches of now still present in areas that are usually snow free during the mountains, I really look forward to see the results of this fall glacier survey. I believe that if, as it is reasonable to expect, the summer melting will be below average, the blame will go to the climate disruption caused by the record high CO2 in the atmosphere, and so on. I really look forward to see this report...

On the European economy, again

All economists in Europe seem worried about deflation. This deflation looks like a big black monster that will kill our economy and as such is to be fought. When I took my basic econonomy course at school, I understood that price lowering is one of the two faces of the basic economy law. Prices are or should be reguated by this law and are the point where demand and offer meet. If we look at the situation in Italy, prices have been rising with no apparent reason since the introduction of the Euro, while salaries have not grown accordingly. The middle class has seen its money available for spending reducing year by year, and therefore the economy have started to shrink. If we want to restart the economy in Italy there are only two options: rise the salaries or lower the prices. The first option requires too many conditions to happen, whilst the second is simply consequence of the free market. Economists (and politicians) shold just let the market have its natural evolution, and stop spoiling it with their policies. The last 10 years should teach us how the economic theories not always work as expected in the real world.

Why the economy will not recovery in Italy

The economic situation in Italy is not good, and, on top of that, is not going to recover any time soon. Yes, we have a lot of unemployed people, but even if the unemployment rate would go down substantiallt in the next few years, the overall economy would still be weak. That is because the avrage employee has a salary that doesn't allow any extra expenses, that kind of expenses that are needed for a real economy recovery. Lowering the taxes is not sufficient. Our gross salary is lower than a net  salary in Germany or France, but the cost of living is comparable. Until there is not a real attention to increase the income of the average family, there will never be a real economy recovery.

Weather is not climate but...

Weather is not climate, but a trend in weather patterns can be an indicator that climate is changing, at least locally. If this assumption is true, we are definitely going towards colder times in this north west corner of Italy. I look forward to a nice walk on the mountain to check how much winter and spring snow is still accumulated in shaded valleys that few years ago were completely snow free at this time of the year...

Another success for Mr. Obama

After Lybia and Ucraine, Mr. Obama can enlist another great success in foreign policy: Iraq. Syria an Egypt are thankful for the US administration not being deeply involved in solving their problems.

The power of the 'chair'

The power of the chair, in Italian 'poltrona', that is a place of power and responsibility, can bring a fight even in the most extremist leftist intellectuals, those who are always right, morally unexceptionable, and who feel they are the only ones empowered to judge the morality of the others. Well, the cronicles tell us, that in front of the opportunity of a chair in the European parliament, Barbara Spinelli, one of the most influent maitre a penser of the Italian left, had no problem to rinnegate her promise to run for the election with the only purpose to collect more votes, and 'reluctantly' accepted the chair, causing protests and arguments between those who believed in her promise.

Listening to some of the talks that take place on the train in the morning, it's clear that a real change in the Italians' culture is light years away...

The tragedy of the immigrants

More and more often we see sad news about poor immigrants dieing along their route towards hope. They escape wars or simply looking for a good job, all looking for their promised land. The question is, does this promised land really exist, or they have also been convinced by irresponsible governments (our governments, not theirs) that once here they would obtain all sorts f benefits? That Italy welcomes immigrants, no matter how many they will be? This is not only injust. It is not true, and cruel. Irresponsible ex ministers that instead of trying to limit the immigration to the amount this Country can handle and convince people to not jump on a boat and risk their life to reach a promised land that doesn't exist, kept making promises they knew they could not maintain, and should feel the responisibility for some those deaths.

Europe, Germany and the economy

Germany is trying it again. Once again is trying to take control of Europe. This time not with their armors and armies. They are using now a much more dangerous and subtle weapon: the Euro. Something that was promoted as generator of future wealth and stability for all Europe, turned out to be a deadly weapon for all European economies, except Germany. Germany is winning the war, and it's ending just like WWII would have ended if Germany prevailed. A powerful and wealthy Germany surrounded by poverty and desolation. What we still don't know is how long it will take before Germany will be sunk in the hole they dig all around their Country.

Time for a change

Just like the title say, it's time for a change. Posting in Italian, although easier for me, is limiting becasuse my posts talk about situations and facts that are very familiar to Italians and as such, not of so great interest. Furthermore, by writing in English I have a much broader, almost worldwide, potential audience. I decided therefore to switch to English. This could be limiting sometimes, as my English skills are not as good as my Italian's but I will try my best to express my toughts and my ideas in the most proper way possible. For those who wander what the title of the blog means, the answer is 'Thoughts of a commuter'. Wish me good luck for the new adventure!

La scuola (elementare) di oggi

La scuola elementare oggi in Italia e' in una situazione disastrosa. Non parlo della carenza di strutture o di materiale o della mancanza di insegnanti. Mi riferisco allo stato dell'insegnamento nelle scuole 'normali', al semplice servizio di insegnamento fornito dalle maestre. Sia per esperienza diretta, sia dal confronto con altri genitori, ho scoperto che non esiste assolutamente unifomita' ne' di programmi ne' di metodo. Non parlo delle differenze normali che esistono tra insegnante ed insegnante, tra scuola e scuola. Parlo di argomenti insegnati, carichi di lavoro, metodi di insegnamento assolutmente diversi e non comparabili. Ogni tentativo di modernizzare la scuola non ha fatto altro che peggiorare la qualita' generale dell'insegnamento. Ci sono insegnanti sempre piu' 'sapute' ma apparentemente sempre meno capacita' di insrgnamento. Nelle classi con piu' di un'insegnante non si riesce piu' a trovare un equilibrio nel carico di lavoro e la mancanza di comunicazione e coordinamento e' disarmante. I nuovi programmi sono svolti con assoluta disomogeneita' di approfondimenti e contenuti tra le varie scuole. Sarebbe da riformare la scuola per portarla indietro di trent'anni. Per il bene di nostri ragazzi.

Il lavoro che non c'e'

I tanti discorsi di questi giorni mi hanno fatto riflettere sulla situazione del lavoro in Italia e sulle soluzioni che i vari personaggi che si sono alternati sui vari palchi hanno proposto. Di lavoro in Italia ce n'e' poco, e questo purtroppo e' risaputo, ma bisogna anche chiedersi quali sono le ragioni di questa carenza. Alcuni dei personaggi di cui sopra tuonavano dal palco che essendo il lavoro un diritto, il governo ha il dovere di creare posti di lavoro. Questo concetto e' alquanto discutibile, perche' il governo non e' un'azienda che genera guadagni per sostenersi. Il governo si sostiene grazie alla tasse pagate dai cittadini ed usa, o dovrebbe usare, tali soldi per produrre servizi ai cittadini nel modo piu' efficiente possibile, cioe' riducendo al minimo indispensabile il numero di persone che impiega. I posti di lavoro non si creano per decreto, ma creando le condizioni affinche' le aziende possano operare sul mercato, in modo che i posti di lavoro non siano fittizi, ma creino effettiva ricchezza, contribuendo allo sviluppo dell'economia e quindi a creare altro lavoro. Ogni posto di lavoro creato non per soddisfare una effettiva necessita' o richiesta del mercato ma con il solo obiettivo di occupare qualcuno, porta un beneficio limitato ad un ristretto gruppo, ma sottrae preziose risorse alla creazione di posti di lavoro 'veri', che generano ricchezza, creando le condizioni per futura disoccupazione. Il dovere del governo e' di creare le condizioni per favorire lo sviluppo delle imprese, e quindi del lavoro, tramite politiche fiscali, creazione di infrastrutture, attivita' di promozione e in Italia, purtroppo, anche lotta alla crimunalita'. 

I guai dell'Euro

Accanto alla crisi che coinvolge milioni di disoccupati, alla continua chiusura di attivita' economiche, drammi che sono sotto l'occhio di tutti, c'e' un altro dramma, forse non altrettanto evidente, e per fortuna non altrettanto grave, ma che e' il vero indicatore del disastro portato dalla moneta unica. In fin dei conti crisi economica e disoccupazione sono le conseguenze di una crisi economica, e potrebbero benissimo non essere dovute all'Euro. Invece il progressivo crollo del potere d'acquisto dei salari, quello si' e' dovuto alla scellerata decisione di unificre le monete europee! Il vero dramma portato dall'Euro e' quello della classe media, in particolare delle famiglie monoreddito, che fino al 2000 campavano dignitosamente e adesso faticano ad arrivare  fine mese!

Historia magistra vitae

Historia magistra vitae usavano dire i Latini per ricordare che occorre imparare dalle esperienze del passato per poter meglio agire nel presente, in particolare evitando di commettere gli stessi errori. E' alla base del concetto di lesson learnt molto presente nel mondo anglosassone. Ora questo concetto e' molto facile da applicare a livello individuale, perche' ciascuno di noi conosce bene la propria storia e sa, o dovrebbe sapere, quali sono stati i propri errori. Ma se dal livello individuale ci spostiamo a livello di societa', il concetto e' ancora applicabile? Spesso la Storia e' stata adattata, piegata, asservita alla convenienza del vincitore di turno, e non rappresenta in modo obiettivo tutto quello che realmente e' stato. Per questa ragione non sempre e' una buona maestra di vita.

Leggi e regolamenti europei

Tra i problemi creati dall'Europa a Paesi come l'Italia, c'e' anche la miriade di leggi, leggiuccole, regolamenti, che nell'intenzioni sono destinate a migliorare la qualita' della vita e a creare una societa' piu' moderna, ma in realta' come l'Italia si vanno a sovrapporre a una legislazione gia' di per se' molto pesante ed intricata, aumentando esponenzialmente l'impegno richiesto ai cittadini onesti che le leggi vogliono rispettare. In fin dei conti le leggi sono l'espressione si una cultura di un popolo. Le differenze culturali tra i vari Paesi europei sono ancora troppo marcate per avere una efficace legislazione comune.

Le grandi nomine

Adesso si spiega la dichiarazione di Moretti, che subito dopo la sfuriata sul taglio degli stipendi ai manager pubblici, aveva fatto un mezzo dietro front, e con tono molto piu' pacato aveva affermato di avere fiducia in Renzi. Probabilmente aveva ricevuto qualche telefonata che lo rassicurava sul suo futuro stipendio, come infatti e' successo. Questo episodio porta ad alcune considerazioni. La prima e' che a Moretti non importava ne' importa assolutamente nulla del successo delle aziende pubbliche. Se in linea con la sua prima dichiarazione fosse stato davvero preoccupato del calo della qualita' dei dirigenti perche' i migliori sarebbero andati all'estero, una rassicurazione sul proprio stipendio non gli avrebbe fatto cambiare idea. La seconda considerazione e' sulle sue effettive capacita' di gestire una societa' come Finmeccanica. Una cosa e' gestire un'azienda pubblica che opera in regime di monopolio sul mercato nazionale, un'altra e' amministrare una multinazionale che deve lottare ongni giorno contro colossi di rilevanza mondiale, potenti e molto ben organizzati. Non conosco lo stato finanziario delle ferrovie dello stato, pardon, di Trenitalia, quindi non mi pronuncio in proposito, ma se devo dare un giudizio dell'azienda sulla base della qualita' di uno dei suoi prodotti che conosco bene - il trasporto locale - mi sento di dire che su un mercato libero le sarebbe molto difficile riuscire a sopravvivere.

Liberta' di pensiero unidirezionale

In tanti invocano a gran voce liberta' di pensiero e di espressione, salvo poi indignarsi ed inalberarsi quando altri esprimono idee in contrasto con le loro. Spesso hanno un atteggiamento simile nei confronti della democrazia, che e' cosa buona e giusta soprattutto se chi vince esprime una posizione in linea con le loro opinioni.

Il meriito di Renzi

Non so quanto di quello che dice Renzi riuscira' a realizzare, ma indipendentemente dai risultati economici che otterra', indipendentemente dalle riforme dello Stato che riucira' ad implementare, bisogna senza dubbio riconoscergli  un grande merito: aver portato allo scoperto coloro che l'Italia davvero non la vogliono cambiare.

Bellezza mattutina

Vedere le montagne innevate di fresco in una assolata mattina di primavera e' il modo migliore per incominciare la giornata!

Pensieri di economia

Premesso che non ho conoscenze specifiche di economia, quindi non so se quello che sto per scrivere sia gia' stato abbondantemente sviluppato e discusso dagli addetti ai lavori, oppure costituisca un insieme di baggianate, vorrei condividere alcune considerazioni su un argomento che mi ha di recente incuriosito, cioe' la tassazione delle rendite finanziarie. E' stata recentemente portata dal 20% al 26%, ma qual'e' una tassazione adeguata?
Se un imprenditore investe una certa quantita' di denaro in un'attivita' produttiva, presumibilmente generera' una certa quantita' di ricchezza, che chiamero' Ricchezza Prodotta. Di questa ricchezza prodotta una parte andra' all'imprenditore come ritorno del proprio investimento, e sulla quale paghera' delle tasse, mentre una parte verra' distribuita come retribuzione dei suoi impiegati, come attivita' dell'indotto, e cosi' via. Questa ricchezza la chiamero' Ricchezza Distribuita. Considerando invece un imprenditore che investe nella finanza, il suo investimento generera' una ricchezza che, in funzione del tipo di investimento, potra' generare una certa quantita' di ricchezza distribuita, ma sara' soprattutto a beneficio dell'investitore. A questo punto qual'e' la tassazione piu' equa? Le tasse sono il contributo di ciascuno al bene della collettivita'. In base a questo principio occorrerebbe calcolare una percentuale media della ricchezza distribuita rispetto alla ricchezza prodotta per l'investitore in attivita' produttive e aggiungere la quota di tasse pagate sul guadagno proprio. La quntita' cosi' ottenuta potrebbe essere un buon parametro per definire una tassazione congrua per le rendite finanziarie, e un buon incentivo per gli investitori a investire in attivita' produttive.

Il rapporto con la natura

Ci sono diversi modi con cui la gente si interfaccia con la natura, che dipendono dalla storia e cultura personale di ciascuno. C'e' un modo 'naturale', che e' il proseguimento di una cultura millenaria di interazione e di uso consapevole delle risorse che la natura offre. E' la cultura contadina tradizionale, che conosce profondamente il proprio ambiente e ne trae la propria sussistenza senza comprometterne l'integrita'. Esiste poi l'agricoltura industriale, finalizzata a massimizzare la produzione, al massimo sfruttamento dei terreni senza troppo curarsi della sostenibilita' e intervenendo in modo artificiale a reintegrare le perdite di produttivita'. Un terzo esempio e' costituito dall' industrializzazionr selvaggia di vario tipo (miniere, legnami, costruzioni, ecc...) che considera la natura una risorsa da sfruttare in modo indiscriminato per incrementare i propri guadagni. Infine ci sono coloro che la natura la amano,o ma non avendola mai vissuta veramente, la frequentano con lo spirito da turista, senza capirla davvero fino in fondo, senza conescerne intimamente i ritmi e le dinamiche. Costoro sono generalmente animati da un grande amore per la natura e le portano grande rispetto, ma la loro interazione con essa e' a volte goffa, un po' impacciata e puo' risultare incomprensibile a chi, con la natura, si rapporta in modo 'naturale'.

Ritardo annunciato

Quando in un treno di 6 carrozze normalmente piene si mettono 3 carrozze chiuse perche'  non ne funzionano le porte e' normale attendersi che ad un certo punto lungo il percorso la gente non riesca piu' a salire... Ieri questo ha causato circa 40 minuti di ritardo. Sara' l'effetto degli aumenti delle tariffe?

La crisi ucraina

Nei prossimi giorni staremo a vedere se Putin sta facendo sul serio o sta bleffando, perche' di sicuro Europa e Stati Uniti stanno bleffando.

Global warming: do you believe in it?

A friend of mine, after I explained why is not to worry of the consequences of global warming, as the dooming forecasts are based on computer models that have been disproved over and over, told me:"I'm glad that nothing bad is going to happen, but I believe in global warming and I will do my best to preserve the environment for my kid's future". The words might not be exactly the same, but the meaning is clear. Global warming is something you believe in. Not a phenomena that can be proven or disproved, but something you believe in, a sort of faith. Long way for the skeptics to go.

I diversamente utili

Sono coloro che devono dimostrare ogni giorno la ragione della propria esistenza. Se ne trovano molti in ogni ambito della societa' e di solito sono frustrati. Il loro sforzo di dimostrare la propria utilita' li rende di solito arroganti e questo non li aiuta ad essere tollerati.

Cultura varia

Troppo spesso si sentono gli studenti parlare di letteratura, filosofia, latino, greco. Molto piu' raramente li si sente parlare di inglese, matematica, fisica, scienze in generale. E' uno specchio della nostra societa', piena di buoni principi e idee ma completamente incapace di pianificazione e pragmatismo. L'uscita dal tunnel e' ancora ben lungi dall'essere vicina.

Brava Carolina!!!

Che bella la medaglia di Carolina Kostner! Ottenuta con una magnifica prestazione frutto di un grandissimo impegno e dedizione oltre che ad un grande talento naturale. Un grande esempio per tanti Italiani che pensano che per avere successo basti apparire. Anche tra la nostra classe dirigente. Per fortuna questo vale solo in Italia e chi ha le qualita' giuste ha ancora la possibilita' di raggiungere il successo appena varcati i confini nazionali. Professionalita' ed impegno sono garanzia di successo qunando e' il merito il parametro di giudizio.

Che bella la metro!

Ogni volta che la uso non posso fare a meno di apprezzare la comodita' e l'efficienza della metro! Unico neo ma perche' non hanno costruito un piccolo tratto in piu' fa:-) cendola arrivare nei pressi della stazione ferroviaria do Collegno????

Alla faccia della semplificazione!!

Mi piacerebbe incontrare quel genio della comunicazione che ha scritto il foglietto informativo per l'antibiotico di mio figlio... Ma possibile che non si possano scrivere le istruzioni in modo che la gente possa capire il dosaggio immediatamente senza dover starci a pensare mezz'ora? Erano piu' semplici quando erano complicati... Almeno si trovavano tutte le informazioni necessarie!

Angela e la rete

Angela Merkel vuole sottrarre il controllo di Internet all'America: si e' accorta che c'e' ancora qualcosa in Europa che non e' sotto esclusivo controllo tedesco!

Governi e mutande

Ma da quando i governi si cambiano cosi', solo perche' se ne ha voglia? Da quando basta chiedere per ottenere di andare al governo? E da qunando si lascia il governo solo perche qualcun altro lo chiede? Questa qualcuno me la deve ancora spiegare.

Complesso europeo

La cultura europea soffre di qualche tipo di complesso che la porta a sentirsi comunque in colpa per qualunque cosa. Si sente in colpa per quando, per vincere la fame, gli Europei emigravano in massa nel Nuovo Mondo dove c'erano terreni e ricchezze in abbondanza. E cosi' facendo posero fine alla civilta' locale. Allora perche' si sente in colpa anche oggi che e' diventata 'vittima' dello stesso tipo di immigrazione? Delle due l'una. O si giustifica comunque l'invasione di un territorio per 'giustificati motivi' oppure bisogna smetterla di fare gli ipocriti e fare di tutto perche' gli Europei non diventino i Toro Seduto del terzo millenio, controllando l'immigrazione anziche' subirla.

Difficolta' di pensieri

Ma come si fa a formulare dei pensieri compiuti, non banali quando si viaggia mezzi addormentati su un treno stipato di passeggeri?
